A Statement of Mission

St. Edward the Confessor Church is a Roman Catholic parish community located in Hunterdon County, N.J., in the Diocese of Metuchen. We as a parish community are committed to following Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Son of Man. We worship and seek to serve the one, triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that this one God has revealed Himself to humankind in a preeminent way in Jesus of Nazareth, the eternal Word of the Father who, in the fullness of time became man, suffered, died, and rose from the dead, in order to reconcile a sinful humanity to God and offer us new and eternal life in the Holy Spirit, received in Baptism and ratified in Confirmation. It is this Spirit that continually renews the face of the earth.

We believe that God`s love is readily accessible to us and invites from us a response, one which we express primarily in our love for God and our neighbor. God reveals Himself and His love for us in an authoritative way in Sacred Scripture and Tradition. We believe as well that the Magisterium, or teaching office in the Church, is the authentic interpreter of the Word of God. As such, we look to the bishops of the Church in communion with the Roman Pontiff, for guidance and direction as we endeavor to better know, love and serve the God who has created and redeemed us.

We encounter the God who has redeemed us in Christ in a beautiful way in Word and in Sacrament. The Lord Jesus continues to mediate salvation to all people through His Church, where His Gospel is proclaimed with authority and believed in faith. It is the Lord Jesus whom we encounter in a tangible, personal manner through the sacraments which, as corporeal manifestations of grace, sustain us as incarnate spirits, united as the People of God.

We are firmly committed to the inviolable dignity of each and every human person from conception until natural death, precisely because each human being is made in the image and likeness of God and is imbued with the very presence of God, who alone is the Lord of life. Because human beings are the pinnacle of God`s creation, we stand with all that upholds and fosters the God given dignity of the human person. We stand firmly opposed to all that detracts from and threatens not only human dignity, but human life itself.

We are committed to sharing the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus with all those in our parish community, particularly our young people through an ongoing and holistic catechesis, one that seeks to transform the whole person ever more into the image of God Himself.

We stand in solidarity with all those who share in the Cross of Christ, particularly the sick, the lonely, the poor, and victims of injustice. We pledge with the grace of God to build up His Kingdom through our commitment to justice and efforts to build a more peaceful local community.

We are committed to ecumenism, prayer, and efforts toward full unity with our separated sisters and brothers in Christ, while faithfully preserving and guarding the immutable truths of our Catholic heritage. We are open to prayer and dialogue with non-Christians and all people who seek the truth, which alone makes us free.

We pledge our loyalty to the Vicar of Christ and the Successors of the Apostles and we are committed to collaborating with them in building the Kingdom of Christ here on earth, even as we await with joyful hope the consummation of that Kingdom in heaven.

We invoke the intercession of Mary, the Mother of all believers, and St. Edward the Confessor, our patron. Through their intercession, may we as a parish community grow in faith, hope and love.

Finally, may those in our community who do not share our Faith be always able to observe our parish family and exclaim, "See how these Christians love one another!"
